The short answer
ReliableAir HVAC Services serves Menlo Park, CA (94025) in San Mateo County, about 12 miles northwest of San Jose. We repair furnaces and AC, add cooling to heat-only homes, and install heat pumps and mini-splits.
Menlo Park is our farthest regular stop to the northwest, about 12 miles from San Jose and across the county line in San Mateo County. Being closer to the Bay, ZIP 94025 usually has gentler summers than the southern valley, and plenty of houses here were built with a furnace and no air conditioning at all. That shapes most of the work we do in town. ReliableAir HVAC Services handles furnace and heating repair, AC repair and installation, heat pumps, ductless mini-splits, maintenance, duct cleaning and indoor air quality for Menlo Park homeowners.
A heating-first town
Mild, damp winters do not sound demanding, but a furnace in Menlo Park may run on and off from fall well into spring. Long, low-intensity seasons wear igniters, inducer motors and blower bearings in their own way. Many of the heating calls we take here involve equipment that is decades old and still mostly working, with one part finally giving out.
We repair what can sensibly be repaired. When a furnace has a cracked heat exchanger, a failing control board on a model with scarce parts, or rust through the cabinet, we explain why a repair is not a good investment and what the replacement choices are.
- Clicking at startup with no flame
- Yellow or lazy burner flames instead of crisp blue
- Blower that squeals or rattles before warming up
- Carbon monoxide alarm sounding near the furnace
Adding air conditioning to a house that never had it
Warm spells still reach the Bay side of the valley, and more owners now want cooling for those weeks. The question is how to add it. If the home has ducts in decent condition, the most direct path is often a heat pump: it replaces the furnace's job in winter and adds cooling in summer, using the existing ductwork.
Older ducts sized only for heating can be too small for cooling airflow, so we measure before promising anything. Where the ducts are undersized or missing, ductless mini-splits place cooling exactly where it is wanted, such as bedrooms and home offices, without opening walls.
Electrical panels and the switch to electric
Going from a gas furnace to a heat pump adds electrical load. Older homes sometimes have panels with little spare capacity, especially after adding an EV charger or induction range. Part of our installation assessment is a look at the panel and the circuit the new equipment will need, so you know before work starts whether an electrician has to be involved.
Many modern heat pumps run on variable-speed compressors that draw less power at startup than older AC units, which can help in tight situations. We will tell you what your panel can support.
Rules, credits and incentives
San Mateo County falls under the Bay Area Air District. Under Rule 9-4, natural gas furnaces manufactured from 2029 must meet a zero-NOx emission standard, which in practice points homeowners toward heat pumps when they replace a furnace after that date. Working equipment does not have to be replaced.
Water heaters have a separate rule, 9-6, with a zero-NOx date for small units set for 2027. The Air District Board is considering amendments in November 2026 that could delay it, so check the current rule before planning a water heater replacement. On the financial side, the federal 25C credit ended for installations after December 31, 2025. BayREN and your local clean energy provider are the places to check for current incentives, and we confirm the offer before quoting.
Keeping a quiet system healthy
Systems in milder towns can go years without obvious trouble, which is exactly why they get neglected. An annual visit catches cracked flue pipes, dirty flame sensors and clogged filters before they cause a no-heat call. For air quality, we check filters, look inside ducts and suggest cleaning only when buildup is real, along with filtration upgrades for allergy or smoke season.
If you would like a single point of contact for the house, we keep service notes for each visit, including model numbers, filter sizes and readings. That history makes the next repair faster and gives you a clear picture of when replacement planning should start, rather than leaving it to a cold January night.
